IAEGER (WVVA) - Members of a McDowell County church are left to pick up the pieces after a fire consumed their sanctuary Thursday morning.

The early-morning blaze destroyed the High Knob Church on Coon Branch Road near Iaeger. A food pantry adjacent to the church was also lost.

The fire began around 3:30 a.m.; multiple crews responded to the scene.

It's unknown at this time what caused the blaze.

Church members who spoke to WVVA News Thursday said they were saddened by the fire, and unsure if they will be able to rebuild. Hear more from them this evening on WVVA News at 5 and 6.

MCDOWELL (WVVA) – A church goes up in flames early Thursday morning in Iaeger.
 
Dispatchers say a fire that started around 3:30 is fully consuming High Knob Church located on Coon Branch Road.
 
Multiple crews are on scene.
 
We are told this is an active church. However, dispatchers say no one was inside and no injures are being reported.
 
The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time.
 
Some phone lines are reportedly down for parts of that area. The phone company has been contacted.
