Pair sentenced for 2013 Princeton murder

PRINCETON (WVVA) - A Mercer County man and woman convicted of murder received their sentences Tuesday.

Latasha Kanode and Steven McDonald were each sentenced to 15 years to life in prison for the murder of Sherry Matthews in July 2013.

Both also received 3 to 15 years for the attempted murder of Edward Thomas and 1 to 5 years for conspiracy.

Kanode received 20 years for a robbery conviction, while McDonald will serve 10 years for robbery.

All sentences will run consecutively.

The pair pleaded guilty last month to charges of first-degree murder, first-degree robbery, attempted murder and conspiracy in connection with the  incident in which Matthews was shot dead at her Princeton home.

Investigators said Kanode and McDonald robbed Matthews, fatally shot her, then shot and wounded Thomas, who was also at the home.

The sentences were handed down in Judge Derek Swope's courtroom. Swope blamed the circumstances on a drug problem that has now "ruined three families."

Family members of the victims and those convicted were tearful has the sentences were delivered.
