TAZEWELL (WVVA) - A Tazewell County man has been charged with malicious wounding after allegedly attacking his mother with a knife at their Abbs Valley home.

Ryan Thomas Fox, 30, is accused of stabbing his mother, 51-year-old Cherrie Whitt Friday morning, Sheriff Brian Hieatt announced at a 2 p.m. news conference.

Hieatt said Whitt suffered two stab wounds -- to her face and neck. The wounds were severe enough to require emergency surgery. She is currently in recovery.

Investigators are unsure at this time what led to the incident.

The suspect and victim lived in the home together with other family members. Those family members removed the victim from the home and took her to a nearby residence where 911 was called.

Fox surrendered to police upon their arrival. He is currently being held without bond.
