Virginia regulators approve APCo transmission rate hike

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Virginia regulators have approved a request from Appalachian Power to increase the amount it charges its customers for its electric transmission costs.

The Virginia State Corporation Commission said Thursday it has approved the utility's request to recover $48.6 million in increased costs.

The new charge will increase the monthly bill for a residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt-hours by $3.88 beginning in May.

Under Virginia law, utilities can seek approval to recover certain transmission costs.

While it filed the request in December, the company said it was the first rate change it has sought for transmission infrastructure improvements since 2009.

Appalachian Power serves about 500,000 customers in Virginia.
