Summers Co. holds community meeting about pill abuse

HINTON, W. Va (WVVA)-- People in Summers County come together for a conversation-- about prescription drug abuse, and how to stop it in their community.

Secretary of State Natalie Tennant, along with Senator Bill Laird, county commissioners, police from multiple agencies, religious leaders, and other community members had a round-table discussion at the Ritz Theater in Hinton.

They talked about grant writing for more money to fight drug abuse, better education for prevention, and the possibility of more intervention programs.

Tennant said coming up with action items like this is a good first step.

"It is important for all of us to come together as police, as city officials, as public officials, to know where each of us is coming from and to make sure that part of the problem doesn't fall through the cracks," she said.

Tennant also addressed growing fears about Zohydro, a new painkiller five to ten times more powerful than painkillers currently on the market.

Community members plan to organize and possibly have more of these meetings in the future to begin working together on the drug abuse problem.
