Elkhorn Water Project moves closer to start date

KIMBALL (WVVA) - McDowell County is one step closer to getting cleaner water.

Contractors placed their bids on the first part of the four-phase, $25 million Elkhorn Water Project.

The first phase replaces water lines from Maybeury, Elkhorn, and Switchback.

Eventually a new 400-thousand gallon water tank will be built on Elkhorn Mountain and a treatment plant in Maybeury.

"They have a lot of leakage and outages and this will be a brand new system to serve that area with fire protection and the possibility for economic growth," project manager Ray Tilley told WVVA.

Two contractors won their bids, all within the project's budget.

The first phase's price tag comes to $8 million with $2 million in loans and $6 million coming from USDA Rural development grants.

Tilley says the contractors will begin work within the next two to three months and have one year to finish before the next phase begins.
