The Drastic TemperatureChanges Have Been Hard on Local Farmers

Posted:

LEWISBURG (WVVA)- The harsh winter has forced farmers to put extra time and effort into beefing up their cattle.

For some, that means a hefty price tag on fuel, feed and labor to get their livestock ready for the market. Area farmers say they've worked 18 to 20 hour days due to some of the heavy storms.

Ben Tuckwiller, a local farmer says the biggest issue is, "This fluctuation in temperature is very hard for all the cattle to adjust their metabolism."

To keep the cows weight up this winter some people have had to give them ten to fifteen percent more feed than in recent years past.

For farm owners such as Charlie Long, that's meant giving his cattle 3,500 lbs more feed every day compared to last year.

That's how he's kept the weight up on his animals.

"My cattle are about in the same condition they were this time last year but, it's just taken that much more feed to keep them at the same place."
