Ribbon cut on new Mercer County Health Department

BLUEFIELD (WVVA) - State and local dignitaries gathered in Green Valley Wednesday to officially cut the ribbon on the new Mercer County Health Department building.

Speakers including U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall spoke to those in attendance about the benefits of the nearly four-year project.

"So many people have worked hard and been so persistent over a long period of time to bring an adequate health facility to Mercer County," Rep. Rahall told WVVA.

The project began in 2010, when the department received funding to tear down the dilapidated old health department building and rebuild a new one at the same location on Blue-Prince Road.

Late Senator Robert Byrd secured $4 million for the rebuilding and at the ceremony he was remembered and praised by all.

One person who was especially emotional during the ceremony was the department's former administrator, Melody Rickman.  She still vividly remembers the aging old building.

"It had mold," she told WVVA.  "It has asbestos.  It served its purpose, it was a good building, but it was old."

The state-of-the-art new building is now open to the public.
