BEAVER (NEWS RELEASE) - Leah Kirk, age 21, was sentenced today in Beckley, West Virginia, by United States District Court Judge Irene C. Berger to three years of probation and ordered to perform 100 hours of community service.

Kirk previously pleaded guilty in November 2013 to distributing oxycodone, a powerful prescription pain killer.  Kirk admitted that between May 15, 2013 and June 12, 2013, she sold several oxycodone pills and alprazolam pills to a confidential informant who was working with the Beckley Police Department and the Raleigh County Sheriff's Department.  The drug sale occurred on Eisenhower Drive in Beckley.

This case was prosecuted as part of an ongoing effort led by the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of West Virginia to combat the illicit sale and misuse of prescription drugs and heroin. The United States Attorney's Office, joined by federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, is committed to aggressively pursuing and shutting down illegal pill trafficking, eliminating open air drug markets, and curtailing the spread of opiate painkillers and heroin.
