BECKLEY (WVVA) - Raleigh County Schools Superintendent Jim Brown has announced his resignation, effective after the end of the school year.

In a statement released Tuesday, Brown cited personal reasons for the resignation. His resignation goes into effect on June 30.

Brown took over as Raleigh County superintendent prior to the 2012-13 school year. He previously held the same position in McDowell County from 2010-2012.

Following is the full statement from Brown:

"This morning, I tendered my resignation as superintendent of Raleigh County Schools effective June 30th for personal reasons.  Over the past nineteen months, our district leadership team has worked very hard to establish a framework aligned with high quality standards that is data driven, results oriented and student centered.  Our work is consistent with best practice models used all across the nation in high performing schools and districts.  As superintendent, I recognize that change is hard.  I also know that it is not only inevitable but necessary.  Ultimately, I stand by the work that we have done.  Every decision we have made has been in the best interest of the students we serve. Thank you."
