Mom gets 7 1/2 years in fatal shooting

PRINCETON (WVVA) - A local woman gets more than seven years in prison for killing a mom following a dispute that started between their children.

Judith Kowaleski-Slagle was previously convicted of voluntary manslaughter for the March 2013 shooting death of Elizabeth Slagle.

Police said the incident began when their two daughters got into an altercation on a school bus.

The moms began to argue back and forth via text message, finally deciding to meet in Brushfork to settle the dispute.

Elizabeth Slagle's family say they are happy to see Kowaleski-Slagle receive jail time, but they know it will not bring Elizabeth back.

I am very upset and hurt today," said Rhonda Johnson, relative of Slagle.  "She has took so much from our lives.  We can just never replace her.  She was my life."

Slagle's sister, Glenda Thornsbury, said she does not forgive Kowaleski-Slagle for taking her sister's life.  "[Elizabeth] was just a wonderful person.  She would just take the shirt off her back.  She would do anything for anyone, just like she did for Judith.  And Judith turned around and murdered her."

Kowaleski-Slagle maintains the shooting was an accident. She will get credit for 355 days she has already spent in jail and on home confinement.

The judge also granted her request to attend her father's funeral this week.  He passed away Sunday.
