CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Police say snow and ice were factors in two multi-vehicle pileups on Interstate 77 in Charleston.

Charleston police tell media outlets that the accidents involved a total 11 vehicles. Three people suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say the first pileup was triggered by a car spinning out. It involved five vehicles.

Six other vehicles collided as witnesses tried to flag down motorists to alert them about the first pileup.

Eight vehicles were towed from the scene.

The accidents occurred around 6:05 a.m. Monday in the northbound lanes near the I-77/Interstate 64 split.

The northbound lanes were shut down for more than an hour.
