Student reps join Board of Education meetings

BECKLEY (WVVA) -- There are some new, younger faces at one school district's board of education meetings.

The Raleigh County Board of Education is inviting student representatives to their meetings.

These representatives are high school seniors.  The state department came up with the idea a few years ago.

During the meetings, students have the chance to share their experience as a student in Raleigh County, and even chime in on issues up for discussion.

"It's a great way for us to highlight some of our seniors," says Jim Brown, superintendent of Raleigh County.  "At the same time, it's a voice for student leadership."

If you have a senior in the Raleigh County School District who would like to be a student representative, it's a nomination process.  They should talk to their high school principal.  According to Brown, principals are looking for outstanding seniors who have showed leadership in and/or out of the classroom.
