BLAND COUNTY (WVVA) - Environmental officials say a fire fighting foam agent is the cause of death for hundreds of fish at a nearby creek.

Bill Hayden with the Virginia department of environmental quality tells WVVA that approximately 5,500 gallons of water and the foaming agent drained into Laurel Creek in Bland County.

The leak occurred Monday evening following a vehicle fire on Interstate 77.

Anglers discovered hundreds of dead fish the next morning.

A contractor has since been hired to remove the fish and clean up the site.  Hayden says there is no reason to believe there is any threat to the public and officials believe the creek will recover.

Gaming officials had stocked the creek with trout on Monday.
