Motorcyclist killed in collision with deputy cruiser

A man is killed when his motorcycle crashes into a Washington County Sheriff's vehicle.

At 1:43 p.m. Tuesday (March 11, 2014), Virginia State Police Sr. Trooper P. John Nixon was called to the scene of a two-vehicle crash. The crash occurred on Route 665/Cleveland Road near the intersection of Route 911/Rooster Lane in Washington County.
A 2013 Harley-Davidson was traveling east on Route 665. As the motorcycle came through a sharp curve, it crossed the centerline and collided with a westbound Ford Explorer. The Explorer, a marked Washington County Sheriff's Office vehicle, swerved to the right in an attempt to avoid the oncoming motorcycle which had spun out on its side and slid backwards into the Explorer.
The deputies in the Ford Explorer immediately stopped and began CPR on the motorcyclist until the rescue squad arrived. The  motorcyclist, Dennis D. Ford, 37, of Bristol, Va., did not survive his injuries and died at the scene.
Neither deputy was injured in the crash.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation at this time. The Virginia State Police Wytheville Crash Reconstruction Team is assisting with the investigation.
