WELCH (WVVA) - A McDowell County man is behind bars after allegedly stealing more than $10,000 worth of batteries from equipment at a mine site.

Deputies were called to the mines in the Welch area on March 6. Upon investigation it was discovered that 34 batteries valued at $300 each had been taken from equipment at the site.

After contacting local salvage yards, deputies determined that 32-year-old Joseph Eric Sacra of Northfork had stolen the batteries and sold them for scrap, according to a news release from the McDowell County Sheriff's Department.

Sacra was arrested Monday and charged with grand larceny. He was arraigned in front of Danny Mitchell and placed on $20,000 bond. He is being held at the McDowell County holding unit awaiting transport to South Western Regional Jail.
