UPDATE: Thousands affected by power outage

BLUEFIELD (WVVA) - According to Appalachian Power's online outage map, service has been fully restored to customers in McDowell, Mercer and Tazewell counties following a service disruption earlier Monday.

BLUEFIELD (WVVA) - Nearly 13,000 customers were without power Monday after a transmission line went out of service.

Appalachian Power spokesperson Phil Moye says the 138kV line went out shortly after 2 p.m., as crews were conducting maintenance at the Minnix Mountain Station near Montcalm.

The line supplies power to the Minnix Mountain, New Hope and Switchback stations, which provide power to nearly 13,000 customers in Mercer and McDowell counties.

Moye said most customers were expected to be restored by 4 p.m.

BLUEFIELD, W. Va (WVVA)-- Appalachian Power spokesperson Phil Moye confirms there are thousands of people without power in Mercer County, as well as multiple outages in McDowell and Tazewell counties.

At 2:45 PM Monday, there were 11,682 outages in Mercer County alone. 585 were reported in McDowell, and 1274 were reported in Tazewell County.

Moye says it is believed to be a transmission line outage causing these problems across the area.

Appalachian Power employees are currently investigating the incident. They expect restoration to happen by 6 PM Monday.
