WVVA follow up-Good Samaritan Food Pantry reopens

Richlands, Va. (WVVA)--Good news for needy families in the Richlands, Va. area. Two weeks after a local food pantry is destroyed by fire, it is back up and running at its temporary location.

"The Friday morning after the fire was put out there were people coming up wanting to know what they are going to do for food, say pantry volunteer Wayne Thompson.

Volunteers with the Good Samaritan Food Pantry served about 150 families on its first day back in operation. It will open for a few hours again on Friday.

"We want to be sure that everybody that missed out will be able to get their food again," says pantry manager Ralph "Moon" Mullins.

The temporary location on Kents Ridge Road is a much smaller building and it lacks refrigeration -at least for the time being. As for the property on Veterans Drive, there are plans to rebuild, but a timeline cannot be given.

"We had some main beams that were bent where the fire was so hot. I think we will be able so salvage some of it."

Though most off the interior is in shambles, two very expensive items were unharmed.

"Both of our freezers are still there and still working. We hope to have them back."

Meanwhile the community it serves is glad to see the food pantry back in operation.

The Good Samaritan Food pantry has received a lot of support since the fire two weeks ago.

Thanks to our viewers, WVVA donated a bounty of groceries--plus some monetary donations. Customers at Grants Supermarket in Richlands and Tazewell have purchased more than 500 gift bags full of food items. Donations are still being accepted at Grants and WVVA.
