FOLLOW UP: Police speak with man in vet clinic video

TAZEWELL (WVVA) - Authorities have spoken with a man seen on surveillance video leaving a dog tied up outside an area veterinarian's office.

Tazewell County Sheriff's Deputies say the dog did not originally belong to the man -- he had found it nearby and brought it to the clinic where he thought it would be safe.

The video of the incident -- originally posted on the Tazewell County Sheriff's Office Facebook page -- was viewed by thousands before being removed due to the overwhelming reaction.

Sheriff Brian Hieatt says the man's intentions were good, but his actions were not the proper way to care for a stray animal.

"We have rescue centers, we have code enforcement officers who can come and pick the dog up to make sure it has food, shelter, and water," Hieatt said.

"His motivations were correct. That's just not the way you would handle it. It was a Sunday. That center was closed. Anything could happen with the dog being unattended."

The man's name is not being released because of several threats made against him as a result of the backlash from the video.
