Salt shortage adds to winter blues as many look forward to summer weather

BLUEFIELD, Va (WVVA)-- Many businesses and homeowners know snowy sidewalks can mean dangerously slick conditions.

The logical answer might be to go to the store and pick up some rock salt to treat them. But what do you do when they've sold out?

We spoke with some people who were just hunting from store to store to store Monday, looking for a place that has some in stock.

At Lowe's in Bluefield, managers said me they've been out of rock salt since the last storm.

Lowes' Outdoor Specialist Pamela Gauger said their suppliers are out as well, and the later it is into the season, the harder it is for them to even get these products.

"The warehouse doesn't supply-- you can't put in an order for it," she said, "because then by the time you got it, it would already be spring. So that's the problem with that."

Customers like Laura Lawson were rushing around trying to pick up a bag, but coming up short.

"Roads are slick and my tires are kind of bald so I'm sliding everywhere," she told us Monday morning. "Everybody's out of salt."

When we spoke with her, she had tried three different stores and all of them were out of salt.

Gauger tells us the best advice for next year is to buy all of this early, because you never know what the rest of the winter can bring.
