The cause behind "Hunks in Heels"

BECKLEY (WVVA) -- In just two weeks Meteorologist Brian Walder and Photojournalist Robert Pauley along with 28 other men will be wearing women's shoes to show their support for victims of abuse in an event called Hunks in Heels.

One of those victims is sharing her story with WVVA.

Shari Howerton of Raleigh County says she suffered through years of spiritual and emotional abuse.  She has recovered from counseling and a lot of soul searching.

Shari has written two books to help herself heal and hopefully inspire other victims.

Her husband, John, will also be participating in the Hunks in Heels event.

"He wasn't the most excited about putting on women's heels," says Shari.  "I'm still working on him trying to get him to actually dress up more than just the shoes, and he told me don't push your luck, but I'm not going to stop working on him.  It makes me really happy to see him doing this."

The event is unfortunately sold out, but you can still donate by voting for your favorite hunk at  Click on the news and events tab.

Shari is offering a free copy of her most recent book "Through My Eyes" to anyone who wishes to make a $25 donation or more to the Women's Resource Center.  You can find out more about her story at
