BRISTOL (NEWS RELEASE) - Roads and Bridges Magazine recently ranked the US Route 460 Connector Bridge in Buchanan County as the top bridge project in North America.

Created in 2000, the Roads and Bridges' Top 10 Bridge awards determines the Top 10 based on project challenges, impact to region and scope of work.

The US Route 460 Connector bridge project is being constructed in Buchanan County, situated near Breaks Interstate Park just south of Virginia's border with Kentucky.  Both states are working together to connect their US Route 460 construction efforts.

Project challenges are no stranger to this ambitious project.

"Terrain, a bridge construction method that is new to southwestern Virginia, as well as coordination efforts with multiple agencies, contractors and another state DOT, make this project unique on many fronts," Michael Russell, VDOT Bristol District Administrator, said.

"We have an excellent team both within VDOT and the contracting industry who show great dedication to providing a quality product to this region," Russell, said.

The design-build team for the construction of the bridge includes prime contractor Bizzack Construction, LLC; bridge subcontractor CJ Mahan Construction Co.; lead designer for roadway and substructure for bridges Stantec; with lead designer for bridge superstructures Jansen Spaans Engineering, Inc.,   RS&H serves as the Virginia Department of Transportation's (VDOT) management representative on the project.

Mandy Cox serves as the US Route 460 Connector/Coalfields Expressway program manager for VDOT and James Parsons, P.E., serves as area construction engineer for the project with Russell Sutherland as contract manager for VDOT.

The project is over halfway complete, with a summer 2015 completion date.   The design-build contract for the Route 460 Connector Phase I project is valued at approximately $113 million.
