Mercer County Sheriffs Department warns of phone scam

Posted:

(WVVA)- A new scam is unraveled by the Mercer County Sheriffs Department.

The incident was reported to deputies by a man who wished to remain anonymous.

We are told this man received a voicemail from a 202 area code informing him that he owed nearly 5,000 dollars to the IRS.

Instead of forking out the cash, he did some digging and found out that not only was this false, the IRS owed him 1,600 dollars.

The anonymous individual did not wish to press charges.

Sheriffs deputies reminds us to never give out personal information to people you don't know.
