Woman accused of conspiring to murder War mayor back in court

WELCH, W. Va (WVVA)-- The woman accused of conspiring to murder former War mayor Thomas Hatcher appeared in court Monday.

Even though she was acquitted of his murder, Rebecca Hatcher still faces a conspiracy charge in the investigation.

Monday, the court discussed evidence allowed in her new trial, set for June 2nd.

Prosecutor Ed Kornish said Hatcher had made a statement to police several days after the mayor's death, denying her involvement in the crime. Kornish said she had told investigators that she went to pick up her brother, Earl Click, on the Virginia side of Bradshaw Mountain the night Hatcher died, but hadn't known the mayor was dead.

The defense argued this evidence should not be admissible, and a testimony from Hatcher herself would better present this.

Judge Marensky ruled that Kornish can use that statement in the new trial.

Rebecca Hatcher's brother, Earl Click, was recently found guilty of murder and conspiracy. A jury was unable to agree on Hatcher's conspiracy charge.

An investigative piece on mayor Hatcher's death will run in the march issue of Playboy magazine, to hit newsstands this Friday.
