UPDATE: Rockslide blocks road in Welch

WELCH, W. Va (WVVA)-- Thursday morning, crews came out to assess the damage in Welch after a rock wall slide on to Summers Street.

The slide was likely caused by moisture, said McDowell County WVDOH Crew Supervisor Andrew Thomas.

The road will remain blocked, and one lane of Riverside Drive above it closed, until crews can clean up the debris.

WELCH, W. Va (WVVA)-- A road is partially blocked by a rockslide in Welch, McDowell County.

State road workers say part of Riverside Drive caved in on to Summers Street around 5:30 PM Wednesday.

One entrance to Summers Street is partially blocked because of the rockslide. Officials say moisture from melting snow mostly caused the slide.

One lane of Riverside Drive will remain closed tonight.

Officials will not begin to assess the damage until Thursday morning, when engineers can get a better look at the area. For now, residents are being asked to avoid the area around the slide if they can, because there are concerns the hillside will continue to slide.
