UPDATE: Cedar Bluff man killed in Buchanan County crash


BUCHANAN COUNTY (WVVA) - State Police have released more details on a truck crash that killed a Cedar Bluff man Tuesday morning.

According to a witness account, the tractor-trailer was traveling downhill on Route 680 around 8:40 a.m. with the brakes smoking heavily. When the truck rounded a curve at the bottom of the hill it struck a utility pole, road sign and railroad bridge, then began to overturn.

The truck went over an embankment and came to a rest upside down in Dismal Creek.

Dennis D. Mills, 59, of Cedar Bluff was pronounced dead at the scene.

The tractor-trailer was carrying a full load of rock dust at the time of the crash. Investigators believe that the truck had caught fire underneath moments before the crash.

The crash remains under investigation by the Virginia State Police.


BUCHANAN COUNTY (WVVA) - One person was killed after a tractor-trailer crashed and caught fire in Buchanan County Tuesday morning.

State troopers responded to the crash near Dismal River Road around 8:50 a.m. Tuesday. The truck ran of the road and caught fire, according to a news release from the State Police.

There is one confirmed fatality. Further details are unknown at this time.

The crash remains under investigation.

Another fatal crash was also under investigation in nearby Wise County Tuesday morning. Two vehicles were involved in a crash there, on Coeburn Mountain Road. One person was confirmed killed.
