People React to VA Gay Marriage Ban Ruled Unconstitutional

VIRGINIA (WVVA)- A federal judge in Virginia struck down the state's ban on same-sex marriage as unconstitutional.

U.S. District Judge Arenda Wright Allen wrote that the ban denied plaintiffs their right to due process and equal protection guaranteed under the 14th amendment of the Constitution.

Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring said same-sex couples won't be permitted to marry and clerks won't be able to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples until the appeals process is finished.

For local residents this information brought on mixed emotions. People such as Dani Velke say, "They've been oppressed. They've been shunned so I'm not gay but I believe again that people should be able to choose their lifestyle."

While Pastor Brad Scott disagrees, "Marriage has a biblical meaning of the fullness of the act of creating. When a family comes together there's supposed to be the potential that a family should be created. That's why I personally have an issue."

People say they will be waiting to see what happens during the appeals process.
