Health risks associated with shoveling snow

BECKLEY (WVVA) -- No matter how in-shape you think you are, shoveling snow can be an intense workout -- comparable to weightlifting.

Shovelers should keep safety on their minds, as digging out comes with the risk of injury.  Injuries can be as simple as pulling a muscle to more serious conditions such as a heart attack.

Some tips to keep in mind while you are moving snow are use a smaller shovel, stay hydrated, take frequent breaks and stop if you feel pain or shortness of breath.

As temperatures increase during the day Friday, the snow will become heavier and wetter.  This makes shoveling even more strenuous on the body.
