CU artist performance series to hold Balletik duo concert

ATHENS, W.Va. –  Concord University's Artist Performance Series will be presenting the Balletik Duo Concert Friday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m. in the H.C. Paul Theatre. The H.C. Paul Theatre is located on Concord's campus at 1000 Vermillion Street in Athens, W.Va.

This concert will feature Laurel Black playing marimba and Natalie Calma on violin. Calma is a Venezuelan violinist, currently based in Boston. Recently, she has been involved with The Boston Conservatory's New Music Festival and Boston University's Center for New Music and Equilibrium Concert Series. She is also the co-founder of Balletik Duo along with Black.
Black is a Concord University faculty member. She is a pianist, marimbist, and percussionist, and is very active in several musical fields. She regularly assists the CU choirs, plays for musical productions, and accompanies individual students for juries and recitals.
The concert titled "Memory Play" will feature two world premieres, "Aphorism 10" by Andrew Paul Jackson and "Lyte" by Concord faculty member Tim Mainland. Casey Cangelosi, also a Concord faculty member, and Matt Harvey, a Concord student, will be performing on vibraphone.
This will be Balletik's first concert outside of Massachusetts and will feature some unique opportunities. Black said, "Natalie will lead two improv-based sessions for the community where anyone is welcome. You don't have to read music to improvise. Attendees will have the chance to improvise with Balletik Duo and ask questions."
Admission is free to the public and everyone is welcome to attend. For any questions about the concert please email Laurel Black at
