(WVVA)- In November 2013, WVVA became the first StormReady Supporter in the state of West Virginia.

This followed the StormReady certification of Greenbrier, Wythe and Giles counties as well as the city of Beckley.

Communities can be certified as StormReady, but other businesses, schools and non-governmental entities within these communities can become StormReady Supporters. While counties and cities have a more rigorous process to go through that 'supporters', both require severe weather plans and severe weather safety promotion.

There are several steps to take in order to become StormReady certified, which can be found  here on the StormReady website.

The StormReady process begins with local emergency management contacting their local National Weather Service branch:

For Greenbrier, Summers, Mercer, Monroe, Tazewell, Bland, Wythe, or Giles counties, you can call the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, Virginia at 540-552-0084.

For Pocahontas, Fayette, Raleigh, Wyoming, McDowell, or Buchanan counties, you can call the National Weather Service in Charleston at 304-746-0180.

The WVVA Weather Team proudly congratulates Bluefield Regional Medical Center, Princeton Community Hospital and Mercer county for becoming the most recent StormReady Supporters and community.
