UPDATE: Outage temporarily knocks out power to thousands in Mercer County

Posted:

BLUEFIELD (WVVA) - A power outage disrupted service to thousands of Appalachian Power customers in Mercer County Sunday night -- including WVVA's studios -- before being restored overnight.

The outage occurred shortly before 10 p.m. As of 10:15 p.m. more than 4,700 customers in Mercer County were without service.

The outage temporarily knocked WVVA's signal off the air. Power was restored at WVVA shortly after 11:30 p.m.

Outages were also reported in Raleigh, Fayette, Tazewell and Bland counties. In Raleigh, 911 dispatch reported a utility pole fire around 10:30 p.m. in the Daniels area.

On Monday, AEP officials said an equipment failure at a substation on Bluefield Avenue was to blame for the outage in Mercer County.
