PULASKI, Va. (AP) -- Pulaski police say the body of an infant found in the Draper area has been identified as that of a missing 5-month-old boy.

Police told media outlets on Monday that the body is that of Cory Samuel Cole.

The infant had been missing for a week before searchers found his body Thursday night.

Police arrested the infant's father, 31-year-old Howard Samuel Cole of Pulaski, on a child-abuse charge Thursday morning.

Pulaski Police Chief Gary Roche tells The Roanoke Times that the investigation began when relatives came to the police station Tuesday afternoon. Relatives told police Cole and his son were missing and that the alleged abuse occurred Jan. 26.

He says police have not yet been told the cause of death.


Pulaski, Va. (WVVA) -- Results from the medical examiner's office will determine if the father of a missing five-month-old will be facing more charges.

Howard Cole of Pulaski was arrested Thursday morning on child abuse charges amidst a missing person investigation.

The last time anyone saw his five-month-old son, Cory, was Monday night when his mom left Cory in Howard's care.  She reported him missing Wednesday.

News of police finding an infant's body in a wooded are in nearby Draper is tearing up the tight-knit town.

"That's a gift from God," says Matt Collins of Pulaski.  "My wife and I cried all night yesterday evening when we found out on the news."

"It's just unbelievable," adds Debbie Dake, also a Pulaski resident.  "A child, an infant... I'm lost for words"

The body has to be positively identified as Cory Cole before any additional charges could be filed or the case turns into a homicide investigation.  Chief G. W. Roche tells WVVA he expects those results within the week.  



Pulaski, Va. (WVVA)  Pulaski Police Chief Gary Roche says the body of an infant was found in Draper, Virginia near Interstate 81 matching the description of the five-month-old infant authorities had been searching for.  Roche said he could not confirm the body was that of Cory Samuel Cole but that the age and size of the infant was consistent with their description.

The body was found during the investigation into Howard Samuel Cole, Cory Cole's father, who had allegedly abused his son on Sunday.  An arrest warrant for Howard Cole was issued on Wednesday.  He was arrested Thursday morning around 10:30 AM near the Walmart in Fairlawn. 

Cory Cole was not with Howard at the time of the arrest.  Police say Cory was last seen with his father Monday night. 

Late Thursday night, police found an infant's body in a wooded area in Draper off Old Route 100.  The body was taken to the medical examiner for identification.

PULASKI, Va. (AP) - A Pulaski County man has been arrested on a child-abuse charge in an incident involving his now-missing 5-month-old son.

Pulaski Police Chief Gary Roche says 31-year-old Howard Samuel Cole of Pulaski was arrested on a felony warrant Thursday morning.

Roche says there's no information on the whereabouts of the infant, Cory Samuel Cole.

Media outlets report police searched for evidence in a wooded area of Pulaski on Thursday night.

Police issued the arrest warrant after receiving information that the alleged abuse occurred Sunday morning.
