Beckley council to freeze hiring, decrease spending

BECKLEY (WVVA) -- The city of Beckley held its second council meeting under new leadership tonight, and right out of the gate things are starting to change.

Tonight the council voted for a temporary freeze on hiring new city employees and a ten percent decrease in spending for all departments. This freeze will give the town council time to look over the city's spending habits and find ways to stay within their budget. The current budget is over 17 million dollars per year.

The temporary freeze on hiring gives the new mayor a chance to see what cutbacks need to be made before adding new staff. The mayor says he needs these two things to happen in order to properly deal with the budget process.

The council also unanimously approved the promotion of Lonnie Christian as the new Chief of Police for the city of Beckley.

Christian will be sworn in Wednesday morning at 10 a.m.
