APCO announces coal-fired power plant closures

(WVVA)- Appalachian Power President and COO Charles Patton tells WVVA that the Glen Lyn power plant will be closing and that EPA regulations are playing a major role.

The Kanawha River plant, which is just outside of Charleston, and the Sporn units near Point Pleasant, will also be closing.

Another one of APCO's Virginia plants will be converted to natural gas in lieu of closing.

Patton says it would cost Appalachian Power at least 200 to 300 million dollars to upgrade these plants to meet EPA standards. Company officials are doing everything they can to curb job loss from these plant closures.
