Hillsville teenager charged with arson

CARROLL CO., Va. – An 18-year-old Hillsville man faces multiple charges in connection with brush fires set in Carroll County in recent days. On Jan. 27, 2014, Virginia State Police arrested Bobby Eugene Wagner Jr., on two counts of arson, destruction of property, obstruction of justice, trespassing and two hunting violations.

On the afternoon of Jan. 26, 2014, the Hillsville Fire Department responded to the area of Double Cabin Road and Buckhorn Road in Carroll County to battle a brush & field fire that had spread to over two acres. The next day, Jan. 27, the fire department was called to the same location to battle a much smaller blaze.

Fire officials requested the Virginia State Police to respond to investigate the matter.  Trooper C.W. Keesling and his bloodhound, Sherlock, Trooper S.M. Cochran and Virginia Department of Forestry Officer David Edwards responded to the scene.

Sherlock was able to identify a scent at the site of the arsons and track from the scene to a nearby residence in the 7500 block of Double Cabin Road. Wagner was located at that residence. Further investigation led to Wagner's subsequent arrest. He has been released on bond.
