UPDATE: Derailed train halts traffic in Tazewell County


JEWELL RIDGE (WVVA) - Officials have released more details on a train derailment that disrupted traffic in Tazewell County Tuesday.

Seven of 179 empty coal train cars left the tracks in the Jewell Ridge area Tuesday afternoon. Two crew members were on board. No injuries were reported.

The train was en route to Grundy from Norfolk. The tracks were expected to be re-opened Wednesday afternoon.

Railroad traffic has been re-routed as crews work to clear the scene.


TAZEWELL CO., Va. -- A derailed freight train halts traffic in Tazewell County.

Dispatchers say the train ran off the tracks this afternoon around 1:15 p.m. on Jewell Ridge Road.  We're told a crew from Norfolk Southern is on scene working to clear debris.
