Parents explain their choice to home school their children

OAK HILL, W. Va (WVVA)-- Yesterday we posted on Facebook, asking whether you home school your children, and if so, why?

We received an overwhelming response of shares, likes, and comments.

Tuesday, we visited a home school family to talk about their decision to home school.

Kristen Adkins of Oak Hill told us her decision involved the search for a better fit for her children according to their needs.

"I can purchase curriculum," she said. "I can find free things on the Internet that each child will learn with according to their learning styles."

She added that a more comfortable environment for learning helps her children succeed, and she's also able to incorporate a Christian message into her lessons.

But many in our online discussion also questioned the quality of education home school students receive.
Adkins tells us her children still have to take regular assessments, and then present the results to the county and state. This is part of how they hold themselves accountable, she said.
