2 Bluefields to celebrate 90th wedding anniversary

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. (AP) -- Officials in the two Bluefields are preparing to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the cities' marriage.

Bluefield, Va., originally was named Graham. Historians say the city changed its name in 1924 to capitalize on the acclaim of Bluefield, W.Va., as a coal town.

The switch was marked with the wedding of a Virginia man and a West Virginia woman near the state line on July 12, 1924.

Bluefield, Va., Mayor Don Harris tells the Bluefield Daily Telegraph that officials plan to duplicate the 1924 ceremony this summer. A date hasn't been set.

Harris says he hopes the anniversary will be the start of the cities working together.

Bluefield, W.Va., Mayor Tom Cole says both cities are willing to work together. But no decisions have been made on any projects.
