Security upgrades coming to Islamic Center

It's been about a month since the Islamic Center in Princeton was vandalized.

As the investigation continues, the center is taking steps to prevent any further destruction of their building.  The center is installing a fence and security cameras to make sure those who should have access to the mosque have it.

Last month vandals spray-painted offensive messages on the mosque of the Islamic Center in Princeton.

"We thought we would be able to just wash out the graffiti but it turned out to be a much more difficult job than we thought originally," says Dr. Abdul Piracha of the I.S.A.R. Islamic Center.

A month after the incident the clean-up continues. In fact, Doctor Piracha says the company that supplied the bricks for the mosque need to match up the colors of the bricks again because workers can't totally clean up the graffiti. He adds the center has improved security starting with a fence around the property.

"We have beefed up security with security cameras, and we are going to put in an electronic gate so that the only people that have access to the mosque will be able to come," says Dr. Piracha.

Mercer County Sheriff Don Meadows says the investigation into the vandalism continues, but at this point he adds the incident does not appear to be a hate crime because there was another vandalism incident at the rec center in Ceres around the same time.

"If you have some ill feelings towards this community, then at least come and see us and talk with the people in this community who have lived with us for the last 30-40 years," says Dr. Piracha.

If you have any information on the vandalism at the Islamic Center, call the Mercer County Sheriff's Department.
