Volunteers observe the National Day of Service in McDowell Co.

DAVY, W. Va (WVVA)-- People in a McDowell County community get a helping hand for the National Day of Service from the Twin Branch Adventure Facility Americorps Program.

Volunteers and Americorps workers planned a fun day for families in Davy.

Children twelve and under enjoyed games, food, and a treasure hunt outside, while learning about preserving the environment and the importance of volunteerism.

The Americorps also gave out backpacks full of snacks and toiletries to the children who attended.

They say it's all about making the community a better place.

Crew leader Jessi Gardner said, "Some families, they don't have this kind of stuff at home. So we are just giving back to the kids who may not have that at home."

Amanda Todt, who took her family to the event, agreed. "These days, every penny is accounted for," she said. "Money is tight these days, so anything that can be helpful, we appreciate."

The group was prepared to serve 50 children at the event.
