RICHMOND (WVVA) -- In the blink of an eye, Virginia is becoming a key factor in the nationwide fight to grant gay men and women the right to marry.

Traditionally conservative Utah and Oklahoma recently made court gains on the issue, so gay rights advocates in Virginia are motivated by this news and the new mood ushered in by a Democratic sweep at the top of the ticket.

Virginia's gay marriage ban spark nationwide interest because of the state's role in the 1967 landmark Supreme Court case ruling laws against interracial marriage unconstitutional.
