Beckley police to host "citizens' academy"

BECKLEY (WVVA) -- A local police department is opening its doors to the public.

Beckley Police are accepting applications for their Citizens' Police Academy.  It is an educational seminar for people who live or work in Beckley, about the ins and outs of the criminal justice system.

The program starts March 20 and runs on Thursdays for 10 weeks, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.  There is no cost for participants.

Officers say this is a chance to foster a better, more open relationship with the public.

"Different classes that we've got the best response out of is when we have our drug investigators come in and talk about drug investigations, domestic violence and our investigators," says Officer Jake Corey, Beckley Police Department.  "Also we do a thing with our K-9s.  They come in and people absolutely love that."

Applications are available at or by stopping into the police station in person.
