Officials say it's impossible to estimate when Rt. 3 rock slide will clear

BECKLEY (WVVA) -- Nearly three weeks have come and gone since a giant rock slide closed down part of Route 3 in Raleigh County, near Naoma.

Progress has been made, but the road is still impassible.

Representatives with the West Virginia Division of Highways say this slide is different than many because it involves three R's -- road, rock and river.

Crews are performing controlled blasts because there are homes very close to this site.

The next step is clearing away and finding a place for the massive amount of rock.

"This is a confined area.  There's not much room," says Alan Reed, Asst. District Engineer, WVDOH.  "You can see the magnitude, the size.  The height.  The size of the rocks.  It's a very dangerous process, and it has to be done in a controlled manner."

There's still no exact time table as to when the road will be reopened.
