MERCER CO. (WVVA) - Dustie Beller was on trial for running over a woman with her car all for chainsaw. In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day the Appalachian Coal Country Team (ACCT) will be holding a volunteer recruitment drive to support The Carpenter's Corner meal program in downtown Beckley.  The Carpenter's Corner provides free meals to those in need, and is seeking new volunteer support.

The ACCT invites anyone interested in volunteering to join them on January 20 between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. at the Carpenter's Corner located at 104 East Prince Street. Volunteers will be able to learn more about volunteer opportunities with the Carpenters Corner and other nonprofits in the area.  Members of the ACCT support office will celebrate the Legacy of Dr, King with inspiration programs as well as an activity entitled: "I have a dream for my community".

The Carpenter's Corner serves meals every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 11AM – 1PM, and served 28,070 meals in 2013.  Anyone interested in volunteering their time to serve those in need should contact Diann Purnesti at 304-890-4444.  The Carpenter's Corner is also in need of non-perishable bulk food donations.

MLK Day of Service is a time for Americans to answer Dr. King's challenge to do something for others.  Just as Dr. King set big goals and focused relentlessly on results, we need sustained citizen action to address today's social challenges.  Communities and nonprofits across the country are gearing up for a "day on, not a day off," organizing thousands of volunteer service events nationwide.

In the communities the ACCT serves throughout seven states in Appalachia, 13 MLK day service projects are being held in honor of the National Day of Service.  These projects include a food drive in Pennsylvania, environmental stewardship lessons for youth in Kentucky, and community artwork in Tennessee.

The ACCT is a coalition of change-minded grassroots-level watershed improvement groups determined to repair the environmental degradation left from historic coal mining while creating economic stability needed in our rural communities. The ACCT is a partnership between the Office of Surface Mining and AmeriCorps VISTA, currently sponsoring 14 OSM/VISTAs in 6 states across the Appalachian Region and is headquartered in Beckley, WV.
