From Beckley to Bluefield, communities cope with a loss of their own

BECKLEY (WVVA) -- Many who knew Sheila "Coko" Hopkins are heartbroken by the news of her death.

Even though she was only a freshman at U-C Beckley, she had already made her mark on the university as a member of basketball team.

Just last year, she graduated from Bluefield High School.  In her senior superlatives, she was voted funniest and most unforgettable, a title that holds a little more weight now.

"We're going to play the rest of the season for her because we know that's what she would want us to do," says former BHS teammate and current BHS girls' basketball team member, Tyra Jackson.  "So, play hard and continue to push ourselves as a team."

"To move forward, we gotta stay together and just comfort one another," says Earl Reed, a friend who played pick up basketball with Sheila at U-C.

There was a small vigil at U-C Wednesday evening.  Stay with WVVA for information on more scheduled.
