(WVVA) - The actor who played the Professor in the classic television series 'Gilligan's Island' has died, entertainment website TMZ reports.

Russell Johnson died of natural causes, the report states. He was 89 years old.

The legendary 1960s television series has a special tie to the Two Virginias, as its star, Bob Denver, made Princeton his home in his later years.

Denver's widow, Dreama, shared these thoughts on Johnson's passing:

"Russell was a man among men, the very definition of the word honor. He was a World War II hero, a father who adored his children and a husband devoted to the love of his life, wife Connie. I was blessed to call him friend for over 36 years and my heart is heavy at the loss of this man who greeted me with open arms the first time I walked onto the 'Gilligan's Island' sound stage. I'm a richer person for having known him. My greatest wish is that he and Bob are together again, hitting their marks on that big sound stage in the sky. He will be missed."

'Gilligan's Island' can be seen on WVVA's MeTV. Contact your cable or satellite provider to find out how you can watch.
