Businesses try to bounce back after Main Street fire in Tazewell

TAZEWELL, Va (WVVA)-- After a fire destroyed several Tazewell businesses on New Year's Eve, many are still struggling to bounce back.

The street is partially blocked by dumpsters of rubble and many windows-- still boarded up while officials and insurance personnel evaluate what to do next.

But there is hope-- many we spoke with are trying to move on.

Robert Johann, the owner of Guru's Thrift Store where the fire began, tells us he's trying to find a new location to start over.

And the Main Street Barber Shop has just re-opened this week, a possible symbol of recovery and strength after the fire.

"Well I'm glad to be back to work," said Fred McFarland, its owner.

"It's a blessing that I'm able to work. That's all... I should be grateful for that I think," he said.

He added he's also grateful for his loyal customers-- some of whom have already come back to the shop.

The New Year's Eve fire was ruled accidental, but Tazewell town police tell WVVA they are still investigating the incident.

It's still not clear what's next for the burned building, but some business owners believe it may eventually be torn down because of the excessive damage.
