Mick Bates files for West Virginia House

Mick Bates, a Beckley businessman, filed candidacy papers today as a Democratic candidate to challenge Republican Delegate Linda Sumner in the 2014 General Election.
Bates, who comes from a coal mining family, has lived in Beckley for twenty years.
"I have spent my career trying to make my community a better place. Beckley is a great place to live but it can be even better. We face great challenges in West Virginia and to meet these challenges it will take leadership and hard work. We have had a long history of leadership in Beckley in the House of Delegates that is unfortunately, no longer there. It is time for Beckley to have effective representation in Charleston," said Bates.
His contributions have been acknowledged statewide by West Virginia Executive Magazine, who honored him with a Young Gun Award in 2005, and the West Virginia State Journal, who celebrated him as a Generation Next Honoree in 2006.
Bates's physical therapy company, Bodyworks, employs 19 people and serves thousands throughout Raleigh and Wyoming Counties.
In 2010, he was elected to the Raleigh County Democratic Executive Committee and was the 2011 Chairman of the Beckley Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce.
Mick and his wife Pam have 4 children under the age of 12.
