Several families wait for clean water in Mercer Co. after water line break

SHINBRIER MOUNTAIN (WVVA)-- Tap water is running once again for several families living on Shinbrier Mountain near Pocahontas, Virginia.

While crews repaired their water line, which cracked during last week's storm, approximately seven families had been without running water for nearly a week.

Residents were hauling water from a spring in Maybuery while they waited for the pipe to be replaced.

Officials say the hold-up was mainly because of a bridge that needed repairs before crews could safely fix the line that runs beside it.

Although the water is back now, Pocahontas mayor Ben Gibson says there is a boil water advisory for those affected until further notice.

"What happens is, when water is off in a system for a while," said Mayor Gibson, "there's certain bacterias that build in the line. We need to do numerous tests for the next couple days to make sure the water is safe to use for people."

There's no set date for when the water will be deemed "safe" after testing but Mayor Gibson hopes it will happen by the end of the week.
