CVCA Volunteers to Provide Free Tax Preparation

N. Tazewell, Va. – Clinch Valley Community Action, Inc. will be providing Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) for the eighth year for low to moderate income families and individuals through April 15, 2014.  Certified VITA volunteers will be preparing free 2013 Federal and State tax return preparation for eligible families and individuals with incomes averaging $52,000 or less.  The returns are prepared using Internal Revenue Service approved online tax return preparation software and are also E-Filed free of charge.  VITA volunteers at CVCA will be able to help eligible households prepare simple returns without rental income, employee business expenses, most capital gains and losses from stocks and bonds, farm income, real estate (including sale of inherited property) and other VITA restricted circumstances.  In addition to the CVCA Tazewell office, tax preparation will be offered on-site to a variety of businesses and offices.  In 2013, the VITA program at CVCA prepared 481 Federal tax returns.

Funding for the VITA program at CVCA was secured by a grant from the Virginia Community Action Partnership and the Virginia CASH Campaign.    The Tazewell County Department of Social Services and Tazewell County Office of the Commissioner of Revenue are support partners in CVCA's efforts to ensure that eligible families and individuals receive all tax benefits and credits possible.

Families with children in the home in 2013 may be eligible to claim Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit (CTC).  These credits could boost household yearly incomes by $6044 or more.  Households with more than two EITC eligible children may receive credit for a third child for 2013. Families using the free VITA tax preparation services could save over $300 in fees and interest related to commercial tax preparation products.

CVCA is currently taking appointments for tax return preparation.  Evening hours will be available on Tuesdays and volunteers will also work every other Saturday at the Tazewell office.  Appointments are required for the service due to the heavy volume of returns processed each year.

Low to moderate income families, business managers, and individuals are encouraged to call CVCA at 276-988-5583 with any questions about VITA, EITC and CTC and to make a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance appointment.
